Leeds United intend to hire a new goalkeeper during the summer transfer window to compete with and potentially replace Illan Meslier.
There is growing concern at Elland Road that the 24-year-old is not at the level required to stay their number one if they win promotion to the Premier League.
Daniel Farke’s side is dominating the Championship and appears to be on track for automatic promotion back to the first division, but they believe they will need to enhance their roster in order to contend.
Mick Brown, former Manchester United head scout, informed Football Insider that Leeds are already looking for a replacement for Meslier due to worries over his performance.
While there has been some progress recently, the error-prone character of his performances, as well as his previous spell in the Premier League, have pushed Leeds to explore their options.
Former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson told Football Insider that Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale should be at the top of their list of possible targets.
The 26-year-old is anticipated to quit St Mary’s if the Saints get demoted from the Premier League following a disappointing season in the top level.
Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing Aaron Ramsdale following Illan Meslier’s latest
Robinson previously told Football Insider that Farke intends to replace Meslier with a top-tier goalkeeper after a series of errors this season.
Ramsdale has emerged as one of those targets, as he remains determined to be the first-choice goalkeeper rather than a backup at a Champions League club.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Robinson explained that the signing of Ramsdale would be “huge” for Leeds despite his struggles in a difficult season for Southampton in the Premier League.
“The big one Leeds should look at is Aaron Ramsdale,” he told Football Insider.
“If Leeds are in the Premier League next year, keen an eye on Aaron Ramsdale’s situation.
“You’ve got to admire his attitude, the way he’s gone to Southampton and played a lot of this season injured, playing in a team that’s struggled.
“He didn’t want to play for a title-challenging team or a Champions League side as a cup goalie; instead, he went to Southampton to play every week.
“I believe he’s a top-tier goalkeeper who would be an excellent addition to Leeds.
“That’s going to be a key position for Leeds next year.”
Daniel Farke plans Premier League squad makeover.
Leeds are already making arrangements for the summer in case they are promoted to the Premier League, since they believe their team would need strengthening.
Along with a new goalie, they have targeted the centre-forward position as a crucial area for improvement, citing worries about Patrick Bamford and Joel Piroe.
Robinson told Football Insider that Roma striker Tammy Abraham, along with Southampton’s Cameron Archer, is one of Leeds’ primary targets for the position.
Abraham, 27, is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with a return to the Premier League, his first since leaving Chelsea.
