According to Soccer Laduma, Leeds United are interested in signing South Africa international centre-back Khuliso Mudau this summer.
According to the South African tabloid, the Whites and fellow Championship club Burnley are both interested in the Mamelodi Sundowns defender, with Leeds sending scouts to watch Mudau play.
The Sundowns have yet to initiate negotiations with Leeds over a potential transfer for Mudau, who has also been monitored by Elland Road officials while on international duty with Bafana Bafana.
Mudau, 29, is expected to replace Tottenham loanee Joe Rodon at Elland Road. He recently featured for South Africa in draws and victories against Nigeria and Zimbabwe, respectively.
Leeds are searching for another successful South African move
Leeds’ top objective in this summer’s transfer window is – and should be – signing Rodon on a permanent basis from Spurs, but the Whites’ failure to clinch Premier League promotion and growing interest in Turkey may complicate the deal [Alasdair Gold].
Charlie Cresswell appears to be on his way out, and captain Liam Cooper might follow him on a free transfer, leaving the club with few choices in central defence [Carlton Palmer].
The last time the Peacocks ventured to the southern tip of Africa for a centre-half, they were successful, signing club icon and future captain Lucas Radebe in 1994.
Phil Masinga, who arrived alongside Radebe, and injured striker David Somma had less successful periods, and signing Mudau would be the latest chapter in Leeds’ relationship with South Africa.
The circumstances are undoubtedly different this time around – Mudau would be a relatively senior figure thrust into the thick of a Championship promotion battle – but if the defender can replicate his Sundowns and international form in West Yorkshire, he will be another South African success story at Elland Road.
