Amidst the drama surrounding Georginio Rutter’s departure, Leeds United are still looking for a new winger to replace Crysencio Summerville.
It’s been two weeks since Summerville signed with West Ham United, but Leeds appear to be no closer to finding a replacement for the Championship’s POTS.
Leeds had told the media that they would be ready to sign a new winger as soon as Summerville’s departure was confirmed, but this couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Daniel Farke increased the pressure on the 49ers and his recruitment staff during his pre-West Bromwich Albion press conference on Thursday.
Leeds wants Rangers’ Rabbi Matondo
Even if Leeds have money to spend after making the most money in Europe through player sales, it will be impossible to replace Rutter and Summerville at this stage.
To justify selling both, Leeds will need at least one major signing, and this latest link from Football Scotland does not make sense.
They believe Leeds have added Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo to their list of prospects to replace Summerville, implying ‘strong interest’ from Farke.
Leeds are reportedly considering signing Matondo on a permanent basis or on an initial loan deal with a potential buy option.
The 23-year-old is poised to quit Rangers in the next few weeks after falling down the pecking order under manager Philippe Clement.
Matondo had six goals and four assists in 31 games across all competitions last season. In no way would he be able to replace Summerville’s output.
What Pep Guardiola once stated about Matondo, Leeds’ aim
Despite his youth, Matondo was once recognized as one of the best young talents in the United Kingdom.
Matondo is a Manchester City youth product, and Schalke were willing to pay £10 million to sign him before he made his first senior appearance.
Stoke City were willing to pay a high price for him just a few years after he arrived in Germany, indicating that he has lost his path somewhat since Pep Guardiola lauded him as a top potential.
In 2019, he told GOAL: “Yes, I have some comments. They’re interested in another young talent. I know how terrific he is: an extraordinarily fast winger and a youthful prospect. This club is doing very well.”
