According to Leeds Live, Leeds United are considering promoting Harry Christy to third-choice goalkeeper following recent occurrences at Elland Road.
On Sunday (7 July), the outlet stated on its website that the 20-year-old is expected to join the first-team this summer after Kristoffer Klaesson’s transfer from the Championship was finalized.
Klaesson has signed a permanent agreement with Polish side Rakow Czestochowa, leaving Daniel Farke with only the exit-linked Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow as first-team possibilities at Elland Road.
According to reports, the Whites will attempt to immediately hire a new goalkeeper to replace the departing Norwegian [Joe Donnohue, 7 July], but it now appears like academy star Christie could be promoted instead.
Are Leeds United close to making any new additions during the summer transfer window?
While Leeds United fans are hoping for some form of incoming transfer news this summer, promoting Christy from within the ranks at Elland Road appears to be a wise decision by the Whites.
The young keeper will have learnt a lot during his time with the youth sides, but he will most certainly progress faster if he is in and around the first team, working with players like Meslier and Darlow on a daily basis.
In a perfect scenario, Leeds would like the 20-year-old to be their first-choice stopper in the near future, and while that is doubtful between now and the end of next season, Christy will gain from more first-team play.
Furthermore, while a third-choice goalkeeper would not break the bank monetarily, elevating from within the academy will allow Farke to spend more money on other vital areas in the coming weeks and months.
It will be interesting to observe Leeds’ approach now that Klaesson’s departure has been confirmed. They don’t want to run out of possibilities, but they can’t afford to restrict the path for academy potential.
