Leeds United’s second summer signing is close after exit deal was sanctioned. – YEP

Leeds United are close to acquiring a new goalkeeper to fill the gap left by Kristoffer Klaesson’s confirmed departure to Poland.

The Whites are in the midst of pre-season training this week, having returned to Thorp Arch earlier in July, with Daniel Farke seeking to improve on his Championship performance.

Leeds have already made one ambitious addition in Joe Rodon, who has been confirmed to join from Tottenham as part of the deal that sent Archie Gray to Spurs.

Leeds will sign a new goalkeeper to replace Klaesson.

Confirmation came over the weekend of Kristoffer Klaesson’s permanent exit from Elland Road, three years on from his arrival in 2021.

Klaesson joined Polish side Raków Częstochowa from Leeds to see his time at Elland Road come to an end, off the back of three senior appearances for the club where he didn’t concede a goal.

In the aftermath to this, it leaves Leeds with two senior ‘keepers in Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow, which the YEP have reported will trigger the club to dip into the market to replace Klaesson as third-choice ‘keeper.

Joe Donnohue provided an update on the club’s search to replace the Norway U21 international.

In terms of potential new signings, Football Insider reported shortly before Klaesson’s departure that the club was considering a surprise move for former academy stopper Alex Cairns.

The 31-year-old is currently on the books of League Two club Salford City, helping his side win the penalty shootout against Leeds last season back in August.

Cairns to replace Klaesson makes a lot of sense

It’s not a transfer deal in or out that is going to be monumentally different to our season, given that it’s a third choice keeper we’re talking about.

However, if Cairns is the man to replace Klaesson, it is a worthy investment to strengthen the experience that Farke sorely lacks.

Cairns may not have set foot on the pitch, but his knowledge in the dressing room and the expectations he would place on the pitch are invaluable to us.
