Leeds United have revealed that Archie Gray’s effort against Leicester City on February 23rd was modified to an own goal by the dubious goals panel.
The 17-year-old celebrated putting the Whites ahead in the 83rd minute of the eventual 3-1 triumph, but it has since been determined that it was an own goal by Foxes defender Wout Faes.
Connor Roberts had leveled the score not long earlier, and Patrick Bamford added a third in injury time.
On Monday (4 March), Adam Pope disclosed the update on X, writing: “Club have confirmed that Archie Gray’s “goal” against Leicester City has been classed as an own goal by the dubious goals panel.”
How essential is Archie Gray to Leeds United?
Although Gray was denied the crucial goal, with Faes diverting the ball past Mads Hermansen, the amazing events at Elland Road will live on in the longtime Leeds fan’s memories.
Despite being moved from his natural midfield position to full-back by Farke, the teenager has been an excellent addition to Leeds’ starting XI this season.
Gray replaced Sam Byram, Jamie Shackleton, and Djed Spence before Leeds concluded his loan from Tottenham Hotspur, and it appears he will stay in the position for the foreseeable future.
Gray’s typical position has been tough to place due to the midfield arsenal of Glen Kamara, Ethan Ampadu, and Ilia Gruev, but the FA Cup match against Chelsea provided him with the perfect opportunity to demonstrate his midfield prowess.
After starting 31 of Leeds’ 35 league games this season, Farke has no choice but to force Gray into the starting lineup. The Whites are a much better team with the teenage wonder on the roster.
