The most recent Leeds United news as four clubs compete for the two available automatic promotion slots in what appears to be a close fight to the finish line.
As we approach the final stretch of the season, it appears like the Championship promotion race will be thrilling and intense over the next few months.
With Leicester City playing in the FA Cup and Leeds United defeating Millwall 2-0 prior to the international break, the latter moved up to the top of the standings on goal differential, surpassing their rivals. But Leicester still has a match to play.
A few weeks ago, many supporters could not have believed that this scenario could occur, as Leicester appeared to be winning the league and the crown with ease. The lead has vanished due to a small error made by Enzo Maresca’s team and the Whites’ play since Christmas.
Teams can take a break and assess how the season is progressing during the international break. With eight games left, Leeds will find out their fate; Ipswich, who are only one point behind, are continuing to bite at their heels.
Even while every game that’s left matters immensely, some are more significant than others. In light of this, Leeds has three crucial games coming up as they aim to make a first-time Premier League comeback.
Hull City (H), April 1, kickoff at 8 p.m.
This time of year, games should ideally be against clubs that don’t have much on the line. On Easter Monday, when Hull City visits Elland Road, that won’t be the case.
Three points behind Norwich in sixth position in the league, the Tigers are now ranked seventh. They are among the several clubs hoping to compete in the postseason come season’s end.
Thus far in this campaign, Hull has no problem winning against teams that are further in the standings. They took all three points from their September visit to the King Power Stadium, when they led twice against Leicester in the 2-2 home tie that resulted in a draw. They also interrupted Southampton’s remarkable run of victories last month, with a 0-0 stalemate in the rematch with Leeds.
With Leicester playing Norwich at the King Power Stadium in the early kickoff, there will be even more suspense in the game. The Foxes will be playing before Leeds take off for the second time in three days.
Saturday, April 6, 3 p.m. kickoff versus Coventry City (A).
Leeds could have an advantage when they visit the Coventry Building Society Arena since the Sky Blues have already demonstrated their abilities in their run to the FA Cup semifinal. The match takes place a little more than two weeks before they go to Wembley to face Manchester United.
Nevertheless, Coventry is unlikely to exploit that as a diversion because they are also vying for play-off spots this season. They are four points behind sixth-place Norwich City in the league standings, in eighth place.
At Elland Road, the rematch resulted in a 1-1 tie.
With all three games starting at 3 p.m., this combination of games will also mark a rare occasion when Leeds, Leicester, and Southampton will all be playing at the same time. But, Leeds will enter the contest aware of how Ipswich fared in their encounter with Norwich City at kickoff at 12 p.m.
Southampton (H), Saturday, May 4, kickoff at 1:30 p.m.
For the past few months, this is presumably the match that everyone has been watching, especially while Southampton was enjoying an incredible run of victories. Although the Saints have subsequently somewhat faded, they are still nine points behind Leeds and Leicester in the race for promotion.
In the rematch at St Mary’s back in September, Southampton prevailed 3-1. Both clubs were still getting used to life in the Championship after being relegated the year before. The Saints will undoubtedly aim for the season finale as a potential championship game if they have any chance of finishing in the top three.
