Your round-up of the most recent Leeds United headlines ahead of Sunday’s Championship match against Millwall.
Leeds United will attempt to solidify their position as serious automatic promotion contenders when they visit Millwall at Elland Road on Sunday. Daniel Farke’s team extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games by defeating Sheffield Wednesday last week, closing down on league leaders Leicester City.
A victory by two or more goals on Sunday will propel Leeds into top position, where they might stay for nearly two weeks due to the March international break. It’s going to be another big week in the promotion battle, and the YEP has picked together some of the latest news in the meanwhile.
Wober’s latest
Max Wober may have played his final game for Leeds, as rumors claim the club is open to permanent bids this summer. According to Football Insider, the defender is poised to leave permanently after joining from RB Salzburg for £11 million only 18 months ago.
Wober was one of three new signings in January 2023, joining Georginio Rutter and on-loan Weston McKennie. The Austrian made the biggest effect right away, but he couldn’t keep the Whites up and finally left to join Borussia Monchengladbach on loan.
There is no permanent option in that loan agreement, and it is uncertain whether the Bundesliga club could afford a permanent move for the defender, who has 22 appearances for them this season. Wober’s contract at Leeds runs until 2027.
Carrick on Ayling.
Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick insists the on-loan Luke Ayling is entirely focused on the forthcoming games, despite concern over his long-term future. The 32-year-old’s loan at Riverside expires this summer, and he is out of contract at Leeds, with no new agreement expected at Elland Road.
“You’re always playing for something, and as things stand right now, that’s obviously what comes next,” Carrick told The Northern Echo. “Looking at him, that is not on his mind at all. He’s all in, anxious to succeed and win games for us. We’ll see how it plays out over the next few months.
“He’s a solid guy, with a charisma that rubs off on others and a commanding presence in the locker room. It’s critical to maintain that equilibrium. Everyone cannot be like that, but certain boys can. He’s had a significant role in it. I believe Bill has demonstrated his experience thoroughly. He’s been in this scenario, seen it, and understands what it takes.
