Leeds United suffer Premier League promotion blow after Burnley clash

Burnley have reduced the distance on Leeds United at the top of the Championship, as the promotion race to the Premier League heats up.

Leeds United’s prospects of promotion to the Premier League have been dashed as Burnley won a crucial three points against Oxford United.

After three goalless draws in four games, the Clarets needed a win to keep pace with Leeds and Sheffield United. Burnley began the encounter on the front foot, but they frustrated their home fans by failing to capitalise on their opportunities.

However, shortly after the half-hour mark, Scott Parker’s team took the lead. Josh Cullen’s tantalizing delivery was mistakenly diverted into his own net by defender Michal Helik, opening the scoring.

The second half followed a typical pattern for Burnley, as they attempted to create a cushion but were unsuccessful. On this occasion, it would not come back to haunt them, as the three points were secured.

Parker’s players were in action on Tuesday night because they will play in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday, when they travel to Southampton. The Whites are also in cup action this weekend against Millwall, but will return to Championship action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Coventry City.

In his pre-match press conference, Daniel Farke addressed the strain of being promoted this season, saying, “This is the expectation.” What I want is to ensure that it belongs.

“I haven’t signed a contract to stay in this league in the next four years. Just because we have the best fans in the country and tradition… together in the last 20 years we were not able to celebrate promotion in front of supporters.

“We came pretty close last season but right now we have a great chance. If we keep going in this way we have a good chance.”
