Leeds United: Pundit gushes about Patrick Bamford and mentions Alejandro Garnacho after ‘sensational’ moment vs Peterborough

ESPN co-commentator David Phillips praised Patrick Bamford’s “sensational” and “unbelievable” goal as Leeds United overcame Peterborough United 2-0 in the FA Cup third round.

Early in the second half at London Road, the Whites striker took a 60-yard pass on his chest, swiveled on the spot, and volleyed into the top-right hander corner from roughly 25 yards.

Phillips thought it was a better attempt than Alejandro Garnacho’s overhead kick for Manchester United against Everton back in November as a co-commentator on ESPN (7 January), as part of the world-feed coverage of the game.

“That is an unbelievable bit of finishing from Bamford, he was able to control that ball while off the deck then swivel on the volley,” Phillips went on to say.

“Talk about Garnacho for Manchester United, for me this is a better goal, had to see that ball from 60 yards, the way he’s able to pull it down, Daniel Farke needs to smile a bit more than that because that is a sensational goal from Patrick Bamford.”

    Incredible ability

Bamford has not had the best season, but he scored in Leeds’ 3-0 win over Birmingham City on New Year’s Day, which was enough to maintain his place against Peterborough.

And he repaid Farke with an absolutely incredible striker performance, snatching the ball out of thin air and unleashing a powerful effort past a hapless Peterborough goalie.

Was it on par with Garnacho’s? Well, that’s definitely a matter of personal preference, because – sorry to say, given who he plays for – the Garnacho goal was also outrageous.

But who knows? It was a fantastic moment for Leeds, a fantastic time for the fans, and a fantastic moment for Bamford. Leeds hasn’t had many deep cup runs in the recent 10-15 years, so let’s hope this will change that! And if not, we’ll always have this to look back on…
