On the surface, an away win in the Championship with a clean sheet is impressive. However, against 10 men for more than 70 minutes, the Whites failed to win the game until Piroe’s 87th-minute goal.
Daniel Farke had some decisions to make with his Leeds United squad on Saturday, when they went to Cardiff City and won 2-0.
Leeds bounced back from a disappointing 1-0 win over Burnley the previous weekend with goals from Largie Ramazani and Joel Piroe to defeat Cardiff away and keep their fourth clean sheet.
Daniel Farke wanted Leeds to end the game sooner, but Ramazani squandered a wonderful opportunity, and Pascal Struijk missed a penalty. Farke was forced to insert Ramazani into the starting lineup when Manor Solomon sustained an injury.
Max Wober and Dan James were also absent, although Patrick Bamford returned, resulting in one player missing the journey to Cardiff, and he may not be seen again at Elland Road until January.
Joe Gelhardt has a tough battle to salvage Leeds’ career.
Gelhardt was linked with a departure from Leeds on deadline day, but the combative forward remained. He has only made one Championship appearance this season, as a late substitution for Sheffield Wednesday.
However, Farke dropped him from the Leeds squad on Saturday for the first time this season. Patrick Bamford has returned to fitness, Joel Piroe is on fire, Mateo Joseph is first choice, and Leeds’ other attackers are suddenly firing.
Gelhardt played wide right against Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup. However, that was before the signings of Manor Solomon and Ramazani, and James is anticipated to return to full fitness in the coming weeks.
Gelhardt might have played his final game for Leeds already.
That late replacement appearance at Hillsborough could be his last for Leeds if players stay fit. He is fourth choice for the striker position, and there is a long list of attacking players ahead of him.
Solomon and Ramazani are the left-side options, Brenden Aaronson and Piroe are the tens, while Wilfried Gnonto and James are on the right. Despite the fact that Solomon and James were injured, Gelhardt did not make the squad.
If he doesn’t make the squad with those two gone, he won’t have a chance once they return. According to Leeds Live, Gelhardt, who was once dubbed as “Messi” by Micah Richards on the Monday Night Club, may not be seen again until January with a new club.
