Leeds United nearly paid £20 million to recruit Michael Cuisance in 2020, and his career since then has shown that they were correct to pull the plug despite failing to improve in midfield.
Promotion return to the Premier League in 2020 was only due to Marcelo Bielsa’s brilliance, but our final demise was owing to the club’s failure to provide the Argentine with the signings his team required.
Bielsa’s squad struggled in midfield due to the reliance on Kalvin Phillips to stay fit, as well as a lack of depth in more advanced positions.
Leeds could’ve recruited Michael Cuisance for £20 million.
It wasn’t for a lack of trying to sign a midfielder, most notably through Rodrigo De Paul’s links, and Michael Cuisance was the closest the club came to doing so.
After leaving Bayern Munich, the French midfielder received a £20 million bid from Leeds, which led to a medical at Elland Road.
The contract was later terminated because the player failed his medical, and the Leeds staff were concerned about a potential long-term injury.
Cuisance is now worth £250,000 as Hertha Berlin deal nears.
As Cuisance prepares for another transfer, Sky Sports correspondent Florian Plettenberg has provided an update on the midfielder’s future.
Cuisance, who is currently signed by Italian club Venezia, spent the 23/24 season on loan with VfL Osnabrück in the 2.Bundesliga, where he obviously impressed German peers in the top level.
Plettenberg has revealed that he will join Hertha Berlin for a sum of up to £250,000:
Cuisance avoided a bullet with his fitness against Leeds.
If we had invested £20 million to Cuisance and he had been as injury prone as the medical professionals predicted, we would have been in serious danger.
It’s already clear that we didn’t spend our money wisely, but adding an injury-prone player to a group that has struggled tremendously in recent years would have been the cherry on top.
Cuisance is encouraged by the fact that he appears to be returning to the heights he planned to achieve as a regular Bundesliga midfielder.
