Leeds United remained second in the Championship as Southampton suffered their second defeat in the last three games, falling 2-1 to Hull City at St Mary’s.
Leeds United are in control of their promotion fate moving into the final stretch as Southampton failed to make the most of their game in hand. A Saints victory today at Hull City would have returned Russell Martin’s side to second place in the Championship.
However, Southampton suffered their second defeat in three games, losing 2-1 at St Mary’s. Anass Zaroury and Fabio Carvalho scored first-half goals that startled the home crowd.
Russell Martin made three half-time substitutions, bringing on Che Adams, David Brooks, and Joe Aribo to breathe new life into his team. Aribo registered late, but it was too little, too late. The result propels the Tigers back into the playoff picture.
After a thrilling home win over bottom club Rotherham United, Ipswich Town moved ahead of Southampton in the standings. Tom Eaves gave the Millers the lead in the second minute, but the Tractor Boys turned the game around with goals from Wes Burns (2) and Kieffer Moore. It appeared that goals from Hakeem Odoffin and Cafu (penalty) had saved a draw for the visitors, but Omari Hutchinson had the final say, scoring a stunning winner deep into additional time.
United are still in second place after tonight’s results, level on points with Town but ahead of them in the automatic promotion spots due to goal difference. With 13 matches remaining, fourth-placed Southampton trail United by two points.
Daniel Farke’s men are the division’s form team, having won eight in a row. They return to play on Friday, when they host table-toppers Leicester City at Elland Road.
If the Whites beat the Foxes, they would close the distance on first place to six points. United remain unbeaten at home, with 40 points from 16 matches.
