Leeds United faces likely Championship shift as ’emergency plan’ is put in place

Leeds United is presently second in the Championship table, behind league leaders Leicester City.

An emergency proposal for a new Championship play-off final date has been developed, which could affect Leeds United.

The Whites are now hoping for automatic promotion, but they face stiff competition from Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton for a top-two spot.
If Leeds finishes the season in third or sixth place, Daniel Farke’s side will qualify for the play-offs. The play-off final is scheduled for May 26, one day after the FA Cup final, which could cause problems for two second-tier teams.

Both Leicester and Coventry City are still in the FA Cup and will face the unimaginable scenario of playing two games in 24 hours if they make it to the finals in both tournaments. This could have been an issue for Leeds had they not been eliminated from the FA Cup by Chelsea at the end of February.

According to the Mirror, extra dates have been scheduled in case one or both of the Championship clubs win this upcoming showdown. If Farke’s team makes it to Wembley through the play-offs, this might have a knock-on impact for Leeds.

Finding a suitable time for such a rescheduled game has been made more difficult by the fact that this year’s Champions League final will be held at the home of English football on June 1, leaving less wiggle room on the calendar. England will face Iceland in a friendly one week later at Wembley Stadium on June 7.

The last Championship team to reach the FA Cup final was Cardiff City in 2008, where they faced Premier League opponents Portsmouth.
