Ipswich Town strolled to a comfortable Championship victory at home to relegation-haunted Sheffield Wednesday, moving above Leeds United to second place.
Leeds United have dropped out of the Championship’s automatic promotion places. Ipswich Town have risen above Daniel Farke’s side after defeating Sheffield Wednesday 6-0 at Portman Road this afternoon.
The Tractor Boys had a great start, gaining the lead at the quarter-hour mark. Wes Burns’ outstanding work set up forward Omari Hutchinson to score.
Things got even better for Town in the 37th minute, when Cameron Burgess increased their lead after the visitors failed to deal with a corner. Prior to the second goal, Ipswich received an injury blow when wide man Burns was forced off due to a knock. Burns was recently named to the Wales squad ahead of the Euro 2024 playoffs.
Nathan Broadhead added a third on the stroke of halftime, putting Wednesday’s game out of reach. Ipswich did not stop there, as Hutchinson scored his second of the afternoon in the 48th minute. Substitute Ali Al-Hamadi scored a late double to exacerbate the Owls’ problems.
This is Town’s seventh victory in their previous eight Championship games. The result puts them at 81 points with eight games remaining.
However, if the Whites defeat Millwall by two goals at Elland Road tomorrow afternoon, they would leapfrog Ipswich and league leaders Leicester City. Farke’s team enters the contest on the heels of a 12-game unbeaten streak.
Neither Leicester nor fourth-placed Southampton have a league match this weekend. The Foxes face Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-final at Stamford Bridge tomorrow, while the Saints have to wait until March 29 for their next match.
