Leeds United have unveiled initial plans to expand Elland Road in the near future, as the club look to increase the capacity to around 53,000.
The Whites are intending to be back in the Premier League sooner rather than later, and in the process, will be hoping to consolidate themselves as one of the biggest clubs in the country once more.
Should they get to the top flight, there are already plans for Leeds to realise their potential under the 49ers.
Leeds confirm 53,000-seater Elland Road plans
Monday brought a reveal from the club and the 49ers, sharing that plans are in place to expand Elland Road by improving the capacity of both the West Stand and North Stand.
In the process, Leeds would be taking their stadium up to a whopping 53,000 seats and becoming one of the largest club stadiums in England.
The 49ers have enlisted the help of architect firm KSS for the design of two new stands on LS11, the same company who helped rebuild Liverpool’s two newest stands at Anfield.
Simon Jordan reacts to Elland Road expansion plans at Leeds
Speaking on talkSPORT (24/9, 12:26pm), Simon Jordan has delivered his verdict on Leeds being set to expand the stadium significantly in the near future.
He suggests that such a development would help Leeds boost their chances of fulfilling their potential in the Premier League, should they get there:
“You’ve now got a club that’s back, and has to be back in the Premier League, and it’s building a 53,000-seater stadium that will be, what, the seventh-largest in the country?
“It tells you where they are, where they should be, and eventually – probably – where they will be.”
Leeds are showing tremendous desire under 49ers, but they need promotion to go to the next level of planning.
It is all well and good that stadium designs are becoming more formal, but this can only happen in the Premier League.
Jordan also points out that it’s surprising that Leeds is planning a 53,000-seater stadium while still in the Championship, but that’s the nature of Leeds’ goals and future plans.
If we return to the top division, Leeds should be in a lot better position under the 49ers’ direction to make it stick.
