Leeds United are looking to sign a new left-back this month, and there’s a fresh name to add to the shortlist.
Junior Firpo and Sam Byram are the Whites’ current left-back options, but both have struggled with injuries this season.
Firpo missed the most of the first half of the season, while Byram has either limped out or been absent from six of Leeds’ previous seven Championship games.
With that in mind, Daniel Farke recognized as early as mid-December that left-back is a position that need attention, and according to Football Scotland, they are interested in a Rangers veteran.
They report that Leeds are now hoping to bring Barisic to England this month, albeit no decision has been made, and Rangers are also interested in keeping him at Ibrox.
Leeds are interested in acquiring Rangers striker Barisic
Barisic is out of contract in the summer. He has been approached by clubs in France, Italy, and Spain for a pre-contract.
Rangers, on the other hand, have made a move to keep him at the club, where he has spent the previous five-and-a-half years of his career, assisting 53 times in 224 games.
And, despite an excellent career at Rangers, things have not always been easy for him in Scotland. He suffered a ‘hounding’ from the Ibrox crowd in October for his performance in a Europa League tie against Aris Limassol.
At the same time, Barisic was a member of the team that won the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership title under Steven Gerrard, who praised him as ‘excellent’ throughout the season.
So, while Barisic has had some difficult times in Scotland, he has also proven to be outstanding value for money, signing for only £2 million given the years of service he has provided them.
If Leeds can finalize a deal, they will gain an experienced 35-time capped Croatia international, but there is still much work to be done.
