Leeds player is now much closer to leaving as optimism increases for a permanent transfer – report

Real Betis are getting closer to signing Diego Llorente from Leeds United, according to Marca.

According to the newspaper’s online edition [6 July], Manuel Pellegrini wants the former Real Madrid star to join Betis by July 10.

The report also states that a switch can be achieved for approximately £3.3 million, despite prior negotiations failing owing to a cheap cost.

Why Leeds United should cut their losses and release Diego Llorente

Since Llorente left West Yorkshire for Roma 18 months ago, fans have not seen the 30-year-old as a Leeds player.

He played a regular role for the Serie A giants, but they clearly did not see enough of him to warrant a bid.

Although some fans may have wanted the defender to come to Elland Road and assist the club compete for promotion, now that Joe Rodon has back, there simply isn’t a place for him.

Especially since Max Wober’s future is uncertain [Rheinische Post, 26 June], as Borussia Monchengladbach has also failed to make a move for the Austria international, despite his loan spell with the club last season.

Leeds also has players like Pascal Struijk and Ethan Ampadu on their roster, so they have plenty of choices.

Indeed, one extra centre-back would be perfect for the Whites, especially given Liam Cooper’s future remains uncertain.

The sum generated by Llorente’s sale may be reinvested directly into the team, increasing the West Yorkshire club’s chances of bringing in some quality players during their promotion push.
