Leeds United might face a points loss if they fail to repay the £190 million in transfer fees owed on time.
On the most recent episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior journalist Pete O’Rourke mentioned how Sheffield United received a two-point deduction from the EFL after failing to make some of the transfer payments they owed.
According to the Whites’ most recent financial statements, £73.6 million in overdue transfer fees are due by the end of June this year.
If the issue is not handled before the deadline, the teams to which they owe money may raise it with FIFA or the FA, resulting in a “ugly” situation for Leeds.
O’Rourke suggested that the unpaid transfer fees are a “worrying sign” for the club, which also reported a £34 million loss in the most recent fiscal year.
Leeds United must address their financial condition.
Elland Road managers will be expecting for a fast return to the Premier League this season to alleviate their financial difficulties.
There has been widespread talk that Leeds may be forced to trade some of their key players if they do not improve in the coming weeks.
That’s not only because some of their talents may want to play at a higher level next season, but also because the club may need to generate some funds to pay off its obligations.
O’Rourke revealed that the Whites may be getting closer to the £83 million in losses allowed by the EFL over a three-year period, after recording a £37 million deficit in 2021-2022.
It elevates the stakes on the pitch for Daniel Farke’s team in the coming weeks as they attempt to clinch a spot in the top tier next season.
