Kris Boyd has expressed sympathy for Nick Walsh following the decision to send off Rangers midfielder Mohamed Diomande against Dundee United.
The former Ibrox striker believes Diomande should not have been sent off for the altercation with Kevin Holt, but admits the referee was not assisted by VAR.
Walsh red carded Diomande in the final minutes of the Scottish Premiership match at Tannadice for an apparent slap on Holt.
Rangers protested the decision, and the Scottish FA overturned the red card following a fast-track hearing.
Boyd branded the affair a “strange one” and questioned why Walsh was not shown different viewpoints of the encounter, admitting a little sympathy for the whistleblower over the controversial call.
Boyd had previously reacted angrily to the “embarrassing” decision.
On The Scottish Sun’s Go Ballistic, Boyd said: “It was an unusual one. I’m delighted it was overturned and Diomande may continue to play because he’s been a key player for the Rangers.
“In terms of the incident itself, I understand why Nick Walsh issued the red card in the first place, given his perspective.
“But when he returns to the monitor, that is the only perspective he sees again. He doesn’t see any other options.
“In a way, you could look at it and say there’s some pity for Nick Walsh because he didn’t see any other angles…so did VAR do its job correctly? Probably not.
“I understand that Kevin Holt’s head did not shift from the angle Nick Walsh noticed. However, once you start handing out cards, Declan Gallagher, who was already booked, is also involved. Kevin Holt delivered a couple of shoves.
“None of them were booked, but Diomande was sent off. I’m simply delighted it was overturned and someone recognized some common sense.”
