Keith Wyness, Everton’s former manager, has asked for a Profitability and Sustainability Rules “amnesty” for promoted clubs following Nottingham Forest’s points deduction.
Speaking on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old, who was CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009 and currently operates a football consultancy advising elite clubs, also urged on raising the PSR barrier from £105 million to £200 million.
Speaking to the Daily Mail on May 13, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis maintained, “PSR appears to me to be an unfair system that does not match the reality of global football standards.”
The Greek billionaire claimed that he “had to invest in order to create a competitive and sustainable club”.
Nottingham Forest were docked four points earlier this year for violating the PSR by £34.5 million.
Wyness seeks PSR amnesty after Nottingham Forest owner speaks up.
They signed 30 players for the 2022-23 season following their promotion from the Championship.
Wyness told Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast: “I completely agree with Marinakis.
“Inflation in football has not been accounted for.
“There should probably be an annual increase, similar to the CPI, to make the breach barrier expand.
“We’re currently at £105 million, when it should be at £200 million, which would have resulted in no breaches for Forest or Everton.
“I’ve also suggested that promoted clubs, such as Ipswich, be granted an amnesty for three years in order to develop their squads and give them an opportunity to do so.
“That would be a more fairer system, and it appears rational; everyone can comprehend it.
“It would lead to a much more competitive Premier League, which is what we all want.”
