Keith Wyness, Everton’s former manager, has stated that clubs such as Liverpool and Arsenal will face a “problem” if Manchester City win the Premier League.
Speaking on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old, who was CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs, claimed state-owned clubs such as City and Newcastle are attempting to deprive the English Premier League of “jeopardy and sporting integrity.”
City has filed a lawsuit against the Premier League to overturn its affiliated party transaction restrictions.
If successful, they will be able to set higher pricing for future commercial and sponsorship deals, effectively bypassing top-tier expenditure limitations.
Football Insider reported on Thursday (6 June) that Newcastle is preparing to submit documents in favor of Manchester City ahead of their arbitration hearing next week.
According to Wyness, Liverpool faces a significant danger as a result of new Man City legal actions.
Wyness argued that City have “poisoned” the Premier League, putting clubs such as Arsenal and Liverpool at risk of falling behind.
He stated on Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast: “This issue is about trying to safeguard PSR while City tries to blow it up.
“If they were to succeed, it would divide society into haves and have-nots.
“Certainly Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have tremendously large finances, which would pose a difficulty for clubs such as Liverpool and Arsenal in particular.
“This is the incorrect way to proceed. We should strive to keep as much jeopardy and sporting integrity as feasible.
“It’s a basic request, but it’s tainted by City’s unrestrained greed.
“The Premier League has to prove that it cannot be purchased.
“It’s a major issue, and it will most likely reach the government at some point.
“This league is a valuable asset that may now be available for sale. If that’s the case, we might as well give up on football.
