Latest Liverpool news and gossip, as Jamie Carragher references recent comments by Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez.
Jamie Carragher, a Liverpool great, has described what he found hilarious about a recent comment by a Manchester United player. The Reds were forced to a 2-2 draw with their bitter rivals at Anfield earlier this month.
Goals from Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo were insufficient to earn a win earlier this month. Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo scored for the visitors, as Liverpool squandered two points in their bid for the Premier League crown.
Martinez delivered an interview following the draw at Anfield, claiming that a “change in mindset” was a deciding element in obtaining a point against Liverpool. Carragher referred to this interview in his recent comments on Manchester United.
Carragher was asked about recent comments made by Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim, who said he is now in charge of one of the worst teams in the club’s history. When asked how the statements might effect the players under Amorim’s direction, the Liverpool icon revealed why he considered Martinez’s recent interview humorous.
“It certainly doesn’t help you confidence-wise, or perhaps belief-wise,” Carragher told Sky Sports when questioned about Amorim’s comments.
“I don’t have much sympathy for the Manchester United players; they’ve been a joke for years.
“A few weeks ago, after they played Liverpool, there was an interview with Lisandro Martinez in which he discussed the distinct mentality – and tapped his skull. I almost broke out laughing when I saw that.
“The amount of times Manchester United have basically threw the towel in or had bad performances over the last four or five years. So I’ve not got much sympathy in the dressing room for the players.
“What I would say is, from the manager’s point of view, how can he then go into the dressing room, between now and the end of the season, and continually try and build them up and give them belief they can go and beat whoever they come up against if he’s said they are one of the worst teams in Man United’s history.
“At no point can I see what he’s [Amorim] going to gain from that.”
