That performance reminded everyone why van Dijk is often regarded as one of the best centre-backs in Premier League history.

Vincent Kompany, for example, falls into that category. When asked by Sky Sports to put together a seven-a-side team comprising some of the current era’s greatest players, the Burnley manager suggested that van Dijk join him at the back.

“I’d have to play with Virgil, yeah I think we would’ve been a good pairing,” he stated.

“Now, I couldn’t play with him because I’d have to do all the running, but there was a younger version of him who could have done it for me.

Vincent Kompany has chosen a Liverpool player who is highly rare in the game due to his seeming lack of vulnerabilities.

Liverpool’s recent struggles should not detract from how strong they have been throughout the season, with Jurgen Klopp’s side looking to complete a quadruple.

Unfortunately, the Reds will only win the Carabao Cup, but the day at Wembley will be remembered for Virgil van Dijk’s amazing performance.

The Liverpool captain scored the only goal against Chelsea, leading a squad depleted by injury to an unexpected triumph.

Vincent Kompany praises Liverpool captain, Virgil van Dijk.

“His understanding of the game, and obviously he’s able to back it up with the execution as well, but his understanding of the game, his leadership, his all-round profile as a defender I really think that it’s very rare, to have very few weaknesses.”

The arrival of the defender is a game changer in Liverpool’s recent history.

Danny Murphy stated that Liverpool should prioritise keeping Virgil van Dijk over Mohamed Salah. You can understand why.

Van Dijk is clearly approaching the end of his career at the greatest level, and he has passed his prime at this point.

However, gaining his signature was a game changer for Liverpool, who had shown promise before to his arrival but needed the defensive depth to go the next step.

Signing Alisson Becker and van Dijk propelled Liverpool to the next level, and he remains one of the league’s finest defenders.
