Liverpool began their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town on Saturday afternoon.
On paper, travelling to a recently promoted side seemed to be an ideal first game, but it was a possible stumbling block for Arne Slot.
Anything less than a win in the Dutchman’s first game would have brought unwanted attention to his team. Fortunately for Slot, the Reds’ second-half performance secured a crucial three points.
It was Liverpool fans’ first genuine chance to see ‘Slot-ball’, and while the first half was nerve-racking, they will have been pleased with what they witnessed after the interval.
During the preseason, much speculation centered on whether Slot would trust Diogo Jota or Darwin Nunez to lead the line. The latter missed the most of the summer preparations after arriving late from his Copa America responsibilities.
Slot trusted Diogo Jota with the starting berth and the Portuguese attacker rewarded his new manager’s faith by scoring Liverpool’s opening goal of the season.
Darwin Nunez remained on the bench for the entire 90 minutes, and speculation that the Uruguayan star is upset is becoming more widespread.
Darwin Nunez under Arne Slot.
Nunez appears to have to compete for his spot under Slot this season, as Jota is currently ahead of him in the pecking order.
Nunez scored 18 goals in all competitions last season, but his inconsistent performance in front of goal proved frustrating.
Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol, who is now on the bench, says Nunez is unhappy with his situation.
“It’s not good for Darwin Nunez. Jota’s score is not excellent. “If you’re Darwin Nunez, you’re probably wondering how to get a start,” Nicol remarked on ESPN.
“If Jota continues to score goals, Nunez will not start.” It’s starting to feel like he’s unhappy sitting on the bench.
“It’s sort of a carry-on from last year, where he pretty much disappeared from the team. It smells a little like that.
Darwin Nunez at Liverpool this season.
It is way too early in the season to claim that Nunez is already overly concerned about his job.
He will undoubtedly be disappointed at missing the first game, but there is still plenty of football to play this season, and he will get his turn to lead the line under Slot.
When he gets his moment, Nunez must demonstrate his ability to be a clinical finisher both inside and outside the box.
