Leeds United were really dominant despite defeating Bristol City 1-0 yesterday night.
The Whites may have won by four or five on another night, but they will be pleased to have won their fifth league game in a row since the turn of the year, due to Willy Gnonto’s goal soon after halftime.
When in possession, Bristol City struggled to break through Leeds’ heavy press and were caught out on several occasions inside their own half, particularly by Crysencio Summerville.
However, Leeds were also quite comfortable playing around Bristol City, with Illan Meslier, Joe Rodon, and Ethan Ampadu frequently holding the ball between themselves to grind their frontmen down at the back.
Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds after the encounter, pundit Jon Newsome praised Meslier’s distribution in particular, noting it was far superior to the previous few weeks.
Newsome praises Meslier’s decision making.
He stated, “The best chance they had throughout the game was when Mehmeti made the run in behind Rodon and got the strike off; it was a really good save by Meslier.”
“He has had detractors this season, but he makes a good save. His distribution was improved, he recognized the high press, and his decision to go long was better than it had previously been. It prepared us for some terrific attacking play.”
Meslier has received significant criticism in recent weeks for several of his performances, including Newsome’s distribution.
Aidy White, a former Leeds defender, believes he has been underperforming recently, but yesterday night should boost his confidence for a number of reasons.
Despite having nothing to do, Meslier made a crucial save in the second half to deny Bristol City’s lone serious chance of the game. These are the types of contributions he should be providing on a weekly basis.
