Graham Smyth has remarked on the links between Illan Meslier and Marseille, amid reports that the Leeds United goalkeeper is in talks to join Roberto de Zerbi’s side.
Illan Meslier is one player who may have a question mark hovering over him as the summer transfer window approaches, with the Frenchman’s growth slowing following an impressive start at Elland Road.
The 24-year-old struggled at times last season, especially in possession. And it appeared that Leeds were open to offers for Meslier as they prepare to leave the Championship on the second attempt.
It appeared that he might have the opportunity to return across the Channel, with reports indicating that Marseille were in talks to recruit Meslier, with Roberto de Zerbi taking charge at Stade Velodrome.
Marseille move for Illan Meslier reports dismissed
However, the links between Meslier and the Ligue 1 side may not be as clear as they appear. Speaking on Inside Elland Road, Smyth believes there is currently nothing in the links.
“The Marseille thing, to me, just isn’t real,” explained the man. “Somebody is pumping that out, but Leeds aren’t aware of the interest, which means that the interest isn’t real, because there hasn’t even been a tentative enquiry, so that’s a non-starter right now.”
Leeds star has a point to prove next season—should he stay?
Meslier was in an odd situation heading into the summer, as most Leeds fans would have gladly accepted a fair offer for the goalkeeper, especially if it would have helped retain Archie Gray at the club.
Meslier, on the other hand, is certainly skilled, having made some’magnificent’ saves last season, particularly against Sunderland and Leicester City. And he has previously demonstrated that he can shine in the Premier League, making it harder for Leeds to secure an upgrade.
Of course, there is still a long way to go in the transfer season, so there is plenty of time for a team to make a move for Meslier – and Leeds may still be open to selling him. However, a move to Marseille appears unlikely at this time.
