Ipswich Town stutter in the Championship promotion race as Leeds United given final day hope

Leeds United remained second as Ipswich Town were beaten to a 3-3 draw by Hull City on Saturday night.

Ipswich Town lost an opportunity to knock Leeds United out of the Championship’s top two when they drew 3-3 with Hull City on Saturday night. The Whites’ dismal loss at QPR on Friday night allowed Ipswich to re-enter the automatic promotion spots and drop Leeds to third, but the Tractor Boys’ point at the MKM Stadium was insufficient to capitalize.

Ipswich remain third in the Championship, trailing only Leeds on goal difference, and Daniel Farke’s side are now guaranteed to go into the final weekend of the regular season with something to play for, regardless of the Tractor Boys’ result at Coventry City on Tuesday night.

A win for Ipswich at the CBS Arena would keep them in the lead heading into the final round of Championship games, but Leeds would still be able to surpass them and clinch automatic promotion if the Suffolk club faltered on next Saturday.

The Suffolk side appeared to be on their way back into the Championship’s automatic promotion spots, but Hull had one more sting in their tail as Noah Ohio leveled late on to peg back Ipswich and keep their own hopes of securing a playoff spot alive.

Of course, Ipswich’s fate remains firmly in their own hands, and they know that if they win four points from their remaining two games, with Huddersfield Town visiting Portman Road on Saturday, they will be promoted. With one loss, Leeds will have the potential to pass them for second place on the final day.

As things stand, Leeds’ most likely route to promotion appears to be through the play-offs, and if they are relegated to third place, they will face either Norwich City, West Bromwich Albion, or Hull City in the semi-final first leg on May 12, with the return leg at Elland Road on May 16. The play-off final will take place at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, May 26.
