Ben Johnson is garnering a lot of attention, and the Tractor Boys are reportedly interested in the fullback.
According to the Daily Mirror (21/4 paper edition; page 71), Ipswich Town has joined the hunt to sign West Ham full-back Ben Johnson.
The Tractor Boys are presently in the running for promotion, which will have allowed their recruitment team to plan for a potentially intriguing summer transfer season.
If they get promoted, it is evident that they will need to strengthen their squad to have the best chance of remaining in the Premier League, despite the fact that their team has done an outstanding job in putting them in contention for back-to-back promotions.
They will need not only more talent in multiple places, but also depth, and one area where they should strive to improve is their full-back department.
Johnson can play on both flanks, which would be beneficial for a team that is about to lose the versatile Brandon Williams when he returns to Manchester United in the summer.
Harry Clarke and Janoi Donacien can play on the right, but it is unclear whether the latter is in McKenna’s plans for next season.
Leif Davis appears to be the sole left-back option after Williams departs.
Davis has done an excellent job, but he needs competition, and he almost had it in January, when Marvin Johnson was prominently connected with a move to Portman.
Interest in Ben Johnson is growing amid West Ham’s uncertain future.
With the player not seeing a lot of playing time this season, Johnson may believe he has a greater chance of succeeding somewhere – and there is no shortage of interest in him.
According to the same Daily Mirror report (via MOT Leeds News), Crystal Palace, Leeds United, and Southampton are still interested in him ahead of the summer.
The Irons will apparently make a last-ditch try to keep the full-back, but it remains to be seen whether David Moyes’ side will be successful, with interest in the player’s signing increasing in recent months.
Ben Johnson might be a terrific addition to Ipswich Town for a variety of reasons.
As previously stated, the Tractor Boys require depth in this position, and Johnson would be ideal for that.
Johnson, who can play on both flanks, might allow Ipswich to make one full-back acquisition rather than two, with other options to consider this summer.
The West Ham player also has plenty of top-flight experience and should only improve with age, so bringing him in is a no-brainer if the Tractor Boys are promoted at the end of the season.
He might potentially be a substitute for Davis if the former Leeds player leaves Portman Road, with several Premier League clubs, including the Irons, reportedly interested in him.
Johnson could prove to be an important addition for Ipswich.
