Rugby league is slated to undergo significant transformation in 2024, which might take the form of a streaming service for the sport.
We already know that every Super League game will be shown live on Sky Sports in 2024, though some games will be broadcast on free-to-air television via the BBC or Channel 4.
However, according to sources in France and comments made by IMG, the sport’s objective is to launch a streaming service in 2024, which would be a huge win for the game and a step forward for rugby league in this country.
This is just one of many changes on the horizon for rugby league and the RFL, who will also see movement on the board.
Dr. Rimla Akhtar OBE has informed the RFL Board that she desires to resign her post as of December 31st for personal reasons.
Dr Akhtar, who joined the Board in December 2019, informed members of the Rugby League Council of her decision today (Thursday) at a meeting in Huddersfield.
“We are deeply saddened that Rimla has made this decision,” said RFL Chair Simon Johnson. Over the previous four years, she has been an incredible colleague and made an exceptional contribution to Rugby League. Rimla has introduced rigor and professionalism to the Board and the Audit and Risk Committee, always encouraging our employees to be their best. She has ensured that inclusion is at the heart of the RFL and the Board’s activities, spearheading the formation and growth of the sport’s first Inclusion Board. “I know she will always be welcomed as a valued friend and supporter of Rugby League.”
“I chose to apply for this role because of the impact that this sport has in its communities and the potential it has to reach even more people and make a positive difference more broadly,” Dr. Akhtar stated. I brought my strong beliefs, many of which are shared by the RFL, and worked hard to ensure that we always did the right thing for the sport and one other. I am immensely proud of the work I have done for our sport over the last four years, particularly in the areas of Audit and Risk and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
I feel that both of these places are well-positioned for success, and I look forward to seeing Rugby League and its communities thrive as a result. I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to serve the people of Rugby League through the RFL, and I wish everyone connected with this great sport the best.”
In the new year, the RFL will begin the search for a new Non-Executive Director.
