The Light Blues star is eager to sit down and discuss a new agreement after it was announced his contracts are up this summer.
Ianis Hagi is eager to meet down with Rangers and negotiate a new contract to extend his time at Ibrox.
Last Monday, Gers manager Philippe Clement disclosed that the Romanian’s contract will expire at the conclusion of this season, 12 months earlier than originally assumed. The Light Blues manager is eager to keep a player who has worked relentlessly to reestablish himself as a vital figure at Ibrox after being frozen out at the start of the season due to a salary dispute.
However, he has intimated that Hagi may have to accept a pay cut if he wants to prolong his five-year contract. So far, no negotiations on new terms have taken place. But Hagi is eager to hear any recommendations Gers is ready to make. A source close to the 26-year-old told Record Sport: “Ianis is content in Glasgow.” Right now, there is nothing new to say about his contract, but he will certainly listen to what the Rangers say. However, no negotiations are currently planned.
Hagi was demoted to Gers’ B team in the summer due to a wage rise provision that would have increased his income if he played just one more game for Clement’s senior squad. Rangers and the player’s representation were able to reach an agreement, allowing Hagi to rejoin his first-team colleagues.
With his contract expiring in the summer, Clement wants him to continue in Glasgow, but concedes it may be impossible depending on the midfielder’s expectations. Speaking last week, he admitted: “Ianis’ contract will expire this season, so there will be negotiations to see if he can stay.”
“I’m not sure what numbers Ianis has in mind, or what club. So they will have conversations. Of course, I’m happy with how Ianis is performing. I knew about him already but there was a situation before the season started that was out of my hands.
“I’m happy that, after discussions with the club, everybody was willing from his side and ours to put water to the wine, come together, and find a solution to that. Clearly, it’s been very beneficial for the team.”
Hagi has already dismissed talk that he may return to Turkey, where his father Gheorge played for Galatasaray when he was one of Europe’s biggest stars, this month. Strasbourg, a French club, has also recently expressed interest. When asked about his future after scoring in last month’s Old Firm victory over Celtic, he responded, “Do I look happy? Yes.
“I am happy, and there are some things you cannot control. I’ve already stated that at this age, I understand what I need to do and the atmosphere in which I need to do it.
“I am quite happy here, and you can certainly see it on the pitch compared to previous season. For me, it’s all about that. In football, you can’t control everything, but one thing is certain: I’m quite happy here.”
