On Tuesday evening, Glen Kamara became the sixth Leeds United player to be sold this summer, with both the club and Stade Rennais confirming his move to France.
Given that the 59-year-old Finland international only joined Leeds from Rangers a year ago, Kamara exits the club after playing an important role in Daniel Farke’s side during 2023-24, appearing in 42 matches.
The 49ers have made it clear that they must sell players in order to balance the books at Elland Road and avoid a potential points deduction under the Profit & Sustainability Rules, which they now have.
Kamara explains his choice to quit Leeds and join Rennes.
The 28-year-old was previously linked with a move to Rennes and now joins the Ligue 1 club on a four-year contract. Rennes are also interested in Crysencio Summerville, another Leeds player.
While Rennes are not in European play, Kamara is leaving Leeds to join a team in one of Europe’s top five divisions. They will be vying for a spot in the Conference League or Europa League.
Speaking to Rennes’ website, Kamara justified his decision to join the Ligue 1 club, where he has signed until 2028: “I had excellent first impressions with the managers. I came here because of the club’s desire.
“I understand that it was established in part due to the training of great players; it is a talent factory. I’m hoping that my experience will help us have the finest season possible. There are numerous resources available to help you succeed.
Leeds cannot see Joe Rothwell as Kamara’s replacement.
Rothwell’s loan move from Bournemouth is a solid signing. It gives Daniel Farke a midfielder capable of scoring goals, something Leeds lacked last season when Kamara failed to score once.
However, Rothwell should be considered as competition for the starting midfield spot rather than a direct replacement. There are conflicting accounts on whether Rothwell was brought to Leeds to replace Kamara.
Nancy Froston has stated that Rothwell is being considered as a potential replacement, but such a move would irritate fans. Leeds should utilize the money they spent on Kamara to sign a new midfielder.
