Liverpool are expected to spend heavily under Arne Slot to avoid any teething problems following the Dutchman’s arrival at Anfield – but while there may be a sizable pot of money to spend, it will not be spent on a “surprise” transfer for Barcelona midfielder Pedri, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Pedri has emerged for Barcelona during the last four years, but he is best known for earning the Golden Boy title in 2021 at the age of 18, which is an astounding feat for any football player. His form has led to speculation of a move overseas, and Liverpool is believed to have been after the small midfielder since he became a regular in Barcelona’s squad. However, Romano believes that such a move is unlikely for a number of reasons.
Pedri: Liverpool Transfer.
Pedro has been linked to Liverpool for quite some time.
Romano stated in his Daily Briefing that, despite reports linking the Spaniard with a move to Merseyside, Pedri is “committed” to Barcelona and has no plans to join the Premier League club. He commented in response to the surprising story:
“Despite what has been published elsewhere, I can assure you that there is nothing between Pedri and Liverpool, or between Liverpool and Barcelona for Pedri – the situation is entirely calm. Pedri is really happy and committed to Barcelona, and he is an important component of the effort at the Nou Camp.”
Pedri has previously been linked with a move to the Reds, with fees of £70 million being bandied about in the past; however, with Barcelona having a superb young team that boasts the likes of Gavi, Pau Cubarsi, Lacine Yamal and more, offering minutes to their youngsters could kickstart a new era similar to the La Masia-heavy period of dominance that came about in the mid-2000s with the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, and Lionel Messi claiming trophy after trophy for
It is unclear how much money Slot will have to spend in the summer, but Liverpool’s midfield ranks are undoubtedly their strongest position – so other targets may be prioritised to maintain them in the title race next year.
Pedri would fit perfectly within Liverpool’s team.
At only 21, the youthful midfielder has already made over 150 senior games.
The Reds already have several playmakers on their roster; Alexis MacAllister is the obvious choice, but along with Dominik Szoboszlai and Harvey Elliott, the trio form an extremely creative team capable of creating opportunities for Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, and Luis Diaz, among others.
Pedri, on the other hand, would be an astute addition to their squad in the unlikely event that he joins Liverpool. Pedri, who is more deep-lying and similar to his current boss Xavi, has already played 139 games for the Blaugrana, scoring 18 goals and assisting 13 in his stint on the north east coast since signing from Las Palmas at the age of 16.
When you consider that Pedri has already earned 18 caps for Spain ahead of EURO 2024, with his debut appearance for La Roja coming shortly after his 18th birthday, it’s evident that Pedri has a bright future wherever he plays football. However, as Romano asserts, it will not be Anfield for the time being.
