Paul Robinson praised Leeds United for “protecting their assets” after Wilfried Gnonto signed a new contract at Elland Road.
The Whites announced [31 August] that the 20-year-old winger had signed a new four-year contract until 2028, which is understood to have no leave clauses [Graham Smyth].
Gnonto has been Daniel Farke’s primary man since the new Championship season began, scoring a goal against Portsmouth in the league opener and driving the club forward.
Robinson told MOT Leeds News: “It’s extremely crucial for the club. I believe it is also necessary for the club to defend its own assets. He made a big comeback last season after claiming he wouldn’t play in preseason.
“The manager’s man-management of the player brought out the best in him between then and the end of the season, allowing him to return to play. Getting him to sign a new contract within a year demonstrates how well the player and Farke get along.
“Now, he starts every game and does well. He appears to be in a good place, so I’m not shocked he’s been offered a new deal. From the player’s perspective, it’s a prize for knuckling down, understanding the circumstance, and accepting the task.
“The club is preserving its assets, which is a sensible thing to do. With FFP and PSR, providing the player a longer-term contract protects his transfer value if he ever leaves.
Wilfried Gnonto signs new contract at Leeds United
Following the exits of Archie Gray, Georginio Rutter, and Crysencio Summerville, Leeds fans hoped for some good news during the summer transfer window.
Despite having to wait until the market closed, Gnonto’s new deal at Elland Road was met with enthusiasm, and the lack of exit clauses is significant for the club.
With so many other players departing West Yorkshire in recent weeks, the Italian winger has an opportunity to be Farke’s crucial player in securing promotion to the Premier League at the second time of asking.
