Paul Robinson is very pleased with Leeds United’s loan signing of Connor Roberts in the January transfer window.
According to The Athletic’s Phil Hay (1 February), the Welsh international came late on Deadline Day from Burnley and instantly expressed his desire to make the transfer permanent.
After losing two full-backs earlier in the window – Djed Spence and Luke Ayling – Daniel Farke faced the possibility of being left with an undermanned defence if no new players were brought in.
However, Robinson believes Roberts, 28, has the ability to deliver a “huge boost” to the Whites in the Premier League promotion quest.
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, he said: “I absolutely believe he’s a good addition. He is a feisty, seasoned player with experience in both the Championship and the Premier League.
“It was clear from the start that Daniel Farke was not going to strengthen his squad solely for the sake of it. He was going to bring in players who could make an effect.
“Connor Roberts is one of those Premier League-caliber players. He has not been given an opportunity this season at Burnley for whatever reason, but when you look at their results and league position, you wonder why a talent like him has not been used more.
“He can play in a variety of positions, and the experience he brings off the field, along with his international quality, will be a major advantage for Leeds.
“That was a player that I was actually pleased to see come in during the window, a player that will make a difference, signing a good-quality football player.”
Leeds United’s signing of Connor Roberts has delighted Paul Robinson.
Roberts’ arrival at Leeds United delivers ‘big boost’ on deadline day.
Leeds United had more players depart Elland Road than enter during the winter transfer window, but with a squad in fantastic form and formerly peripheral individuals rising up in a big way, they appear to have done the important job.
Given how difficult it is for any new recruit to integrate into the high-functioning Whites XI, signing a Premier League defender, particularly one with recent promotion experience, is somewhat of a coup.
Roberts appears to have the type of mindset that Farke will need in the remaining months of the season, and he has joined an already vital Welsh contingent at Elland Road ahead of a trip to his former club Swansea City.
