Fulham came up with all three points thanks to the penalty, which surely didn’t help matters.
Now, Howard Webb has spoken out about an incident involving Liverpool and Nottingham Forest this season that sparked outrage at the time.
Howard Webb speaks out about the Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest affair.
Howard Webb is constantly in the news, with a VAR issue seemingly occurring virtually every week.
Nottingham Forest beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield earlier this season, thanks to a strike from Callum Hudson-Odoi.
However, there was an incident toward the end of the game that sparked significant controversy, when Dominik Szoboszlai was not punished for kicking the ball away while on a yellow card.
Interestingly, Howard Webb has recently spoken out about the episode.
He made the following statement on the Overlap.
“A few weeks ago, a parallel was made between what Trossard did in the City versus Arsenal game and what Szoboszlai did in the Liverpool vs Forest game.
“They’re truly unique in terms of significance since one occurred on a freekick to Man City in an attacking area in extra time at the end of the first half, and Trossard booting the ball away stopped City from even considering restarting the game swiftly.
“I am sure they would have wanted to, or had the chance to. I believe it was 2-1 in favor of Arsenal at the time.
“In the other game, Liverpool is down 1-0 at home to Forest, and it’s 90 plus four minutes. There is an offside or foul call against Liverpool, and Szoboszlai, frustrated, kicks the ball across the penalty area, wasting his time.
“You know, it’d be crazy if we warned him at that point. Why would we caution him at that time for kicking the ball away when Forest stated, “Thanks very much, it’s like you’re doing our job for us.”
“Here, we’d be seen as completely out of touch with the game in that situation, whereas the other one had an impact on City’s ability to restart the game.”
“So because there were players ready to restart in this case, and there were no Forest players present, they wouldn’t have restarted quickly anyhow, you know. To have some comprehension of the game made perfect sense to me, as I’m sure it does to you.”
Consistency is lacking in the Premier League with VAR and referees.
Of fact, Leandro Trossard’s incident for Arsenal against Brighton was a yellow card under the regulations.
However, not issuing Szoboszlai a yellow card for kicking the ball away is absurd because, regardless of the situation or time, players should be penalized for such action.
There are rules in place for a reason, and changing them for certain situations only complicates matters.
