It’s fair to say that Huddersfield Town were not afraid to put their foot down against Leeds United today.
Despite being reduced to ten men for more than half of the game, the Terriers were able to prevent Leeds from making it ten league wins in a row, drawing 1-1 with their West Yorkshire neighbours.
Michal Helik gave Huddersfield the lead just minutes before Jonathan Hogg’s red card, and Patrick Bamford equalised in the second half to earn Leeds a point.
Huddersfield can consider themselves fortunate that they were not dropped to ten men earlier in the first half, when Matthew Pearson delivered a raking challenge down the back of Crysencio Summerville’s legs.
After the game, BBC Radio Leeds pundit Jon Newsome described it as a ‘horrendous’ challenge and was perplexed by some of the reactions from Huddersfield fans.
Newsome is perplexed by the first half decision.
He said: “Some of these away [Huddersfield] fans, I’m not sure what game they watch. I honestly don’t. They’re screaming and shouting for items, and Summerville is being booed.
“If you see Pearson’s tackle, it is awful and deserves a straight red card. However, they are booing Summerville and the referee, which makes you think, “give your head a wobble.” Let’s see what it is, come on.”
To say Huddersfield was putting up some tough challenges would be an understatement, but that has been the treatment Summerville has received all season.
Daniel Farke has had to carefully limit his training load in recent weeks due to a series of minor injuries sustained during matches.
Summerville’s form has recently suffered as a result of the sheer quantity of bad fouls he receives each week.
