Rangers are yet to decide on their next permanent manager after Philippe Clement was relieved of his duties last month.
Barry Ferguson is the man at the helm on an interim basis and, at the moment, it’s unclear who’s going to take up the role permanently.
The Ibrox legend has already had a bit of a choppy start to life as boss with a 2-1 defeat to Motherwell followed by a sensational 3-1 victory over Fenerbahce in the Europa League.
Several managers such as Steven Gerrard have been linked with the hot-seat, but an early issue has already emerged over the former boss.
However, if that obstacle can be overcome, it states there’s a “very real” chance that he could return.
Gerrard would owe money to HMRC if he returned to Rangers
Gerrard’s time as manager at Ibrox is fondly remembered, with the Liverpool legend delivering Rangers their only Scottish Premiership title in the last 14 years.
However, his stay was cut short when he chose to jump ship and take over Aston Villa, which didn’t end how he’d have wanted it to.
After time in Saudi Arabia managing Al-Ettifaq, he’s now being linked with a return to Ibrox, however, potential red tape has emerged which could cause a problem.
According to Rangers News, Gerrard would owe a “considerable” fee to HMRC should he return to Britain in the near future, which they would have to factor in regarding his paycheck.
However, if that obstacle can be overcome, it states there’s a “very real” chance that he could return.
Rangers bringing Gerrard back to Ibrox would be a smart move
Patrick Stewart decided to appoint Ferguson until the end of the season to try and instil some belief back into the team from the fanbase.
Clement’s time in charge caused a fracture between the fans and the club, and even if Ferguson doesn’t deliver much more than the quarter-finals of the Europa League to Ibrox, there will still be a sense of togetherness due to his history with them.
Gerrard’s appointment would likely have a similar effect and while his managerial stints away from Rangers have left a lot to be desired, there’s arguably nothing but good memories from his time in Glasgow.
Of course, Rangers will be looking at a whole host of different options but on paper, the Liverpool legend is a smart move.
Especially if they want to try and get back to winning ways and out of Celtic’s shadow next season.
It looks as though the decision will be made by new owners, too, who could make a huge statement with their first official move in charge.
