Former Leeds United player David Norris believes the club should still sell Wilfried Gnonto, despite an increase in the number of managers interested.
Gnonto began last season in the Championship by refusing to play for the club before scoring eight goals and three assists in 39 league games (22 starts).
The 20-year-old was not selected by Italy for Euro 2024 and has now reportedly stated that he desires to leave Elland Road [The Boot Room, 16 July], with a number of Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United and Everton, pursuing his services.
Norris, who played for the Whites between 2012 and 2015, exclusively told MOT Leeds News: “I still see Gnonto departing. He made a fuss last year and then fared good, albeit in fits and spurts.
“I believe his mind was elsewhere, and people questioned his character.
“I still back him to go and do well because he is a good player, but at the same time I think his time at Leeds is done and the club should cash in.”
The Leeds United chapter might be completed for Gnonto.
With an increasing number of exit options for Gnonto, it will be interesting for Leeds’ talented winger to see where he will play next season.
Everton’s pursuit of fellow Championship hotshot Jaden Philogene was futile, and the Toffees have now turned their attention away from the 13-cap Italian.
The impending sale of Amadou Onana to Aston Villa frees up £50 million for Sean Dyche’s side, though it’s unclear how much will go toward squad additions following the club’s recent takeover debacle.
Then there’s Newcastle [TEAMtalk, 15 July], who are looking for a long-term successor for Saudi-bound Miguel Almiron and have recently sold teenager Yankuba Minteh to Brighton for £33 million.
Gnonto believes he is now ready for the Premier League again and believes he has done Leeds a favour by remaining a year longer than planned, but the next move must be perfect for his career in the top level and to press his way back into international contention.
