‘He’s the Best’: Lucas Radebe names the best manager he had at Leeds—and it wasn’t David O’Leary

Lucas Radebe had an excellent career at Leeds United.

Radebe witnessed everything at Elland Road, from joining the club as a relative unknown to a Champions League semi-final and back down to the Championship.

Radebe witnessed many ups and downs, as well as a fair share of managers in West Yorkshire.

The Chief worked under six permanent managers at Leeds, as well as a few interim leaders, and in an interview with the Seaman Says Podcast, Radebe picked the best gaffer he has had at Leeds.

Radebe talked about the best coach he ever worked with.

“That was George Graham. Do you know what? He is the best manager I have ever worked for. You had a tremendous team, and he came to Leeds as a very severe manager, and based on the results, many people expected another boring Leeds United 1-0 win,” Radebe remarked.

George Graham may have led Leeds to the top.

George Graham is often overlooked in the pantheon of great football managers in this country, but make no mistake: he was a fantastic coach.

His Arsenal club was nearly unbeatable, and he was well on his way to transforming Leeds into a similar powerhouse.

Graham left Elland Road for Tottenham in 1998 because he wanted to return to London, but if he had stayed and had the same level of investment as David O’Leary did in the following years, he may have brought Leeds to the top.

Graham’s time at Leeds is one of football’s great ‘what ifs’, and as Radebe points out, he may have been the best manager Leeds had during this period.
