Jeff Stelling moved to disassociate himself from talkSPORT after mentioning Leeds United live on air on Wednesday (29 May).
Stelling and Ally McCoist were about to discuss the Whites on the Breakfast Show when a recorded version of the chant “Leeds are falling apart again,” set to the tune of Joy Division’s “Love will tear us apart,” was played before they returned to the air.
Stelling and his co-presenter, McCoist, were not pleased with the choice.
Stelling, speaking live on talkSPORT (7:20am), said: “That’s a bit harsh. That was ‘Leeds are falling apart’, which is pretty dang insulting, isn’t it Coisty?”
McCoist responded, “I think so!”
Stelling concluded by asking, “Should we just disassociate ourselves from that? “We had nothing to do with it, did we?”
Leeds United is already desperate to silence their naysayers.
Leeds fans are so used to hearing this “banter” chant that it is no longer a big deal, and the Whites’ fanbase frequently chants it humorously as well.
So while talkSPORT’s decision to play it out on air will be met with little more than an eye roll and a shrug of the shoulders, Stelling deserves credit for calling it out.
For Leeds, the supporters, Daniel Farke, and the players, all of the jibes should be used as fuel to return even stronger next season and give automatic promotion another shot.
Sure, things finished on a bad note this season with more Wembley heartbreak, but when the dust settles, there are plenty of positives to take, and Leeds aren’t exactly flying high, is it?
With a few savvy market movements, Leeds has a good opportunity of competing at the top end of the table again next season.
