‘Great club’: Alan Shearer makes classy Liverpool admission after watching Newcastle win Carabao Cup

Liverpool were deservedly beaten in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday as Newcastle ended their long wait for a major trophy.

The Reds were favourites to win a fourth trophy at Wembley since 2022 but never got going against Eddie Howe’s team.
Right from the first minute, Newcastle were the better team. Having put so much into Tuesday’s clash with PSG at Anfield, Liverpool simply looked spent.
For supporters, there will hopefully still be the small matter of a Premier League title to celebrate.
However, given how overwhelmed and overworked the Liverpool squad have appeared recently, nobody should be taking that as a given just yet.

Alan Shearer, a Newcastle legend, is one of the Reds’ staunch supporters. After seeing his beloved Magpies finally win a trophy, Shearer had some kind words for the defeated finalists.

Alan Shearer praises Liverpool as a ‘wonderful club’

Shearer, along with TV broadcasters Ant and Dec, is possibly the most well-known Newcastle supporter in the country.

As good as he was during his time with the Magpies, the prolific striker never won a trophy with them.

As a result, it was maybe not surprising to see Shearer say a few words about the runners-up during the festivities on Sunday night.

“I know I’m p—- but ……. Liverpool are a great club and will win the league and have been brilliant this season,” he wrote on X.com. “But the Geordies absolutely smashed them today and deserved it….”

Liverpool must not let the Premier League go.

Shearer may be confident, and given that Liverpool is 12 points ahead of Arsenal with nine games remaining, there is solid reason to assume they will win the Premier League.

However, given the events of the past week, it’s understandable that supporters are nervous.

The truth is that Liverpool must win five of nine games to reclaim the Premier League title at Anfield. That is an excellent position to be in.

However, after 34 years of only one league championship, fans have every right to be concerned. The members of the team appear to be devastated.

It would take the worst collapse in Premier League history for Liverpool to lose the title from here. However, until it is mathematically completed, a minor nagging concern will persist.
