Rangers’ possible takeover continues to dominate discussions following Saturday’s defeat to Motherwell.
It’s been all upheaval at Ibrox recently, with Philippe Clement ultimately ousted following a defeat to St Mirren on February 22.
Barry Ferguson has recently been named as interim manager until the conclusion of the season, but his future remains questionable, since Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises are preparing to execute a takeover.
Graeme Souness offers 49ers instructions.
Rangers have had a horrible season, languishing 16 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
Rangers’ 2-1 loss to Motherwell on Saturday (1 March) has raised many doubts about where the club will go from here.
Although Clement has accepted some blame for the Light Blues’ disastrous season, there are clearly some questions thrown at the Ibrox management as well.
As a result, the possibility of a 49ers purchase might change everything for the Glasgow team, which needs funding to play at the levels expected of them.
However, when asked about the transaction, Graeme Souness shook his head and issued a somber message to supporters.
Speaking to the Scottish Sun, Souness said: “Yeah, I certainly want to see Rangers succeed, and I believe that if someone came in with the financial resources to go out and purchase better players, that can only be a positive thing.
“It doesn’t guarantee anything but it would be good news.”
Ibrox takeover could change everything
The disappointment of Rangers this term is not so much because they’ve missed out on winning things but rather because they have been miles away from any possibility of success.
There have always been a level of standards at Ibrox which has seen them as a club competing at the top of the table as well as in cup competitions.
However, the Scottish Premiership was out of sight by Christmas and the gap between the Gers and the top of the table is only widening too.
You can understand why Souness may want to keep expectations in control, as a Rangers takeover does not guarantee success, and there is still much work to be done.
That being said, new owners would undoubtedly mean that the Light Blues could begin to attract a higher level of personnel and players in the hopes of propelling the team ahead.
In the meanwhile, Ferguson will focus all of his efforts on getting his team through the Europa League.
