Derek Ferguson has spoken out on Coventry City manager Frank Lampard becoming Rangers’ next permanent manager.
Following Philippe Clement’s dismissal, the Gers temporarily appointed Derek’s brother Barry Ferguson.
Patrick Stewart took his time while making a decision on the Belgian manager but finally pulled the plug on his tenure after consistent protests from fans.
With Barry taking interim charge until the end of the season, potential new owners 49ers Enterprises will have a decision to make at Ibrox once they complete their takeover.
Lampard capable of Rangers managerial role
Lampard is capable of taking the managerial role at the Light Blues, Derek says.
The former Gers midfielder believes that the Coventry boss would “absolutely” be able to take on the role at the Glaswegian outfit.
While Barry has been given the reins until next summer, Lampard has been tipped to become the permanent manager at Ibrox.
Speaking on Open Goal (6 March), Derek said: “Initially, I wasn’t even thinking Lampard. Absolutely [he would be able to take the Rangers job]. He would be able to handle that.”
Ibrox needs experienced manager after Ferguson
With Barry being accompanied by the likes of Neil McCann at Ibrox on an interim basis, it would make sense for the Light Blues to hire a more experienced head coach soon.
While the current coaching staff, which also includes Billy Dodds and Allan McGregor, steered the Glaswegian outfit to a victory against Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday (6 March), there still needs to be a change in the dugout come next summer.
The Gers were poor in their first two fixtures under Barry in the Scottish Premiership, and victory in Europe doesn’t change that fact.
Clement faced similar issues during his stint at Ibrox as the team had inconsistent domestic displays this season.
The Light Blues’ domestic camapaign is all but done because they haven’t been able to perform the way they have in Europe at times.
Some might argue that Lampard’s record over the last few years has been underwhelming, but the former Chelsea boss has arguably been treated harshly at times.
The 46-year-old enjoyed a fruitful spell at Derby County and did a relatively decent job during his first season at the Blues.
As things stand, Lampard has turned things around at Coventry since being hired, and he could be a big name the 49ers may pursue once they complete their potential takeover.
