Derek Ferguson believes 49ers Enterprises will make a £6 million permanent signing once their Ibrox takeover is finalised.
The franchise arm of the San Francisco 49ers, overseen by Paraag Marathe, has signed an agreement in principle to buy at least 51% of Rangers.
The 49ers intend to take control of the Gers in time for the start of next season, which supporters hope will result in new additions before a ball is played in 2025-26.
Rangers expected to sign Vaclav Cerny on permanent basis
According to player-turned-pundit Ferguson, who spoke exclusively with Ibrox News, the 49ers may be tempted to make Cerny’s loan contract permanent in the summer.
Wolfsburg are reportedly seeking £6 million for Cerny, who has 15 goals and four assists in 34 Scottish Premiership and Europa League appearances this season.
Ferguson stated, “Cerny’s stats are quite good, and he’s definitely been one of the best performers this season. It’s something the club will need to consider.
“If you had asked me a few weeks ago, I would have said no chance. But toward the end of the season, if the 49ers are engaged, I’d like to see him play. If it’s about £6 million, I’m confident they’ll go for it.”
49ers want to leave their mark on Rangers.
While a takeover has not yet been publicly announced, it appears increasingly likely that it will take place in the coming months.
Based on what we’ve seen on the field this season, and with Celtic’s lead in the Scottish Premiership growing by the week, significant adjustments are needed.
Rangers may have suffered this term, but some players have outperformed others.
Cerny’s 19 goals in the top two tournaments in which Rangers compete is a respectable return, despite the fact that he has had some off days, most notably in the loss to Motherwell.
A sum of £6 million seemed reasonable, and it would be a fine piece of business if Rangers could reach an agreement.
Plenty of fresh faces will be needed during the summer, but securing Cerny would at least give the new owners one less issue to cope with.
