Liverpool and Chelsea have both been linked to the Borussia Dortmund player.
Liverpool ‘sent scouts’ to watch Borussia Dortmund teenager Jamie Gittens, according to sources.
The 20-year-old is having a great season for the Bundesliga club, which is only 10th in the table. He’s been the star player, with 11 goals and five assists in 26 games. The highlight thus far has been scoring the equaliser in a 1-1 tie with Bayern Munich.
Gittens, like Jude Bellingham and Jaden Sancho, left England to pursue a career in Germany. He left Manchester City’s academy to join Die Schwarzgelben in 2020, when he was only 16. It’s a career move that has paid off, given Gittens’ impressive development, but the Reading native has been connected back to his home nation.
Some say the England under-21 international is on Liverpool’s radar. According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Reds have been watching Gittens’ progress this season and have dispatched club scouts’several times’ to examine his development. Chelsea is also rumored to be interested, although it will be difficult to sign Gittens during the January transfer window.
Romano stated on his YouTube channel: “Borussia Dortmund wants to keep the player and sees him as an important part of their season.” However, Chelsea and Liverpool are keeping an eye on the situation in case something unusual happens during the summer. Chelsea has made contact with the players to inquire about their current condition. Liverpool is now following the player in terms of scouting, so they are paying extra attention, so we will see what happens next.”
Gittens is valued at €50 million by Transfermarkt and has a contract with Dortmund until 2028. Liverpool presently has six offensive alternatives, including Mo Salah, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, and Federico Chiesa. Salah’s future, however, remains uncertain, since his contract expires at the conclusion of the season, despite scoring 21 goals and providing 17 assists.
Meanwhile, Diaz has already been linked with leaving Liverpool for Barcelona, and Nunez’s future remains uncertain despite coming off the bench to score a late double in last Saturday’s 2-0 win over Brentford. Since joining Liverpool from Benfica for a joint-club record £75 million, the Uruguay international has battled to establish himself as a regular starter.
As Liverpool lead the Premier League by six points, head coach Arne Slot has revealed that he is unlikely to make any major moves in the January transfer window. Speaking earlier this month, the Reds’ head coach stated: “It would be strange if I said during the summer break that we’re really delighted with the team and then told you something different today.
“You always look at the market; this club has always done so. We did it with the goalkeeper (Giorgi Mamardashvili), who we do not currently have. If there is a possibility on the market, this club will always want to bring it in, but the team is doing well.”
