Leeds United’s on loan Welsh international defender Joe Rodon is poised to leave Tottenham Hotspur again next season, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The transfers specialist provided an update on Spurs’ periphery squad members following the conclusion of the 2023/24 Premier League season, with some players deemed surplus to needs in North London anticipated to depart in some form.
Rodon is under contract with the club until June 2025, although he could be transferred for a low price to help reduce the club’s salary bill after missing out on Champions League action. The 26-year-old moved from Swansea City for a reported £11 million, with the ultimate sum potentially rising to £15 million with add-ons in October 2020.
Rodon has made 24 first-team appearances in nearly four years with the club, including time on loan at Stade Rennais in France and this season with Leeds, where he will make his 50th game of the season in this weekend’s Championship play-off final against Southampton.
The center defender has established himself as a fan favourite and dependable back-up for Daniel Farke’s team, and supporters regard him as a transfer priority this summer. Leeds are anticipated to hold preliminary conversations with Spurs, the player, and his representatives ahead of a summer transfer in some form.
Should Leeds win promotion back to the Premier League this weekend, Rodon is expected to stay at Elland Road for another season until his Spurs deal expires at the end of the 2024/25 season. It is unclear if this will be on loan or as a permanent member of Farke’s squad, but early indications suggest that all parties are willing to reach an agreement.
Romano claimed this week that Rodon will be moved out again next season, joining former Leeds loanee Djed Spence, whose loan term at Elland Road was cut short in January.
Tottenham are poised to release many players this summer. Rodon, Spence, and Tanganga are all due to leave again. Bryan Gil and Pierre Højbjerg are also getting interest. Emerson is on AC Milan’s list. Sessegnon exits as a free agent. “Lo Celso is also worth keeping an eye on,” the Italian said.
If Leeds fail to win promotion in this weekend’s Championship final, Rodon’s return looks improbable, at least on a permanent basis, due to financial constraints. United will be obliged to tighten their belts ahead of a second consecutive year outside the Premier League, which means the budget may not be enough to cover the salary of loan players from Premier League clubs, like Rodon.
