According to Football Insider, Liverpool has expressed interest in signing Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt.
New boss Arne Slot believes the 24-year-old is the ideal fit for fellow Dutch international centre-back Virgil Van Dijk.
Manchester United are now in advanced talks to buy De Ligt, but Slot wants Liverpool to take over the deal.
After being disappointed by Ibrahima Konaté, the club’s new manager has identified the centre of defence as an area for improvement.
Football Insider reported (August 8) that the new manager “doesn’t fancy” the 25-year-old centre-back and does not see him as Van Dijk’s regular partner in the coming season.
Arne Slot is lobbying for Liverpool to hijack the Matthijs de Ligt trade.
De Ligt struggled for playing time last season after falling out of favour with former boss Thomas Tuchel, and he has since been linked with a move away from Bavaria.
De Ligt had 23 starts and 30 outings for Bayern last season, as he lost his guaranteed starter status. In comparison, during the previous 2022-23 season, the Holland international started 38 Bayern matches and made 43 appearances in all competitions.
Van Dijk, 33, is a man Liverpool will need to replace in the next transfer windows, and despite his age, De Ligt has plenty of top-level experience.
Man United remain favourites to sign the defender due to his friendship with current manager Erik ten Hag.
