Steven Gerrard is one of the frontrunners being considered for the Rangers manager’s job at the end of the season.
The Liverpool legend began his managerial career at Rangers in 2018, where he led the club to 55 victories in three seasons.
It remains to be seen if Rangers fans would be willing to forgive Gerrard’s exit to Aston Villa, the Scouser infamously reiterating his commitment to the project in Glasgow before moving to Birmingham days later.
But whether or not Rangers fans are ready to go soft on the Steven Gerrard – who remains a figure close to the Ibrox support’s heart – the Gers have been told the legendary midfielder is destined for managerial greatness.
Fabio Capello on Steven Gerrard, the manager.
Fabio Capello might not have been able to lead England’s so-called golden generation to victory.
However, the renowned Italian manager, who is now 78, had a significant impact on the careers of some of the Three Lions’ most iconic players.
Among them is former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, who played a crucial role in Capello’s England team from 2007 to 2012.
While Hodgson, Capello’s replacement, appointed Gerrard as permanent captain in 2012, Gerrard alleging the Italian ‘didn’t believe’ in him prior to the 2014 World Cup (BBC Sport), the ex-Real Madrid and Juventus coach had long worked closely with the Scouser.
Fabio Capello has now predicted that Steven Gerrard and former Rangers player Frank Lampard will go down in history as managers.
Lampard is impressing at Coventry City after being passed over for the Ibrox job in favour of Philippe Clement in late 2023.
Capello tells Flashscore that Gerrard and Lampard have the attitude to thrive in management because they will always learn from their mistakes, the most serious of which the former AS Roma, Juventus, and AC Milan player says is entering management too early.
“When you start to play, when you finish playing, you have to do something different, you have to prepare something different,” Capello told reporters.
“You may handle that one team right away, one from the first division. (Andrea) Pirlo managed Juventus, while Lampard managed Chelsea.
“After I ceased playing, I spent the first five years working with the academy. When you work with the academy, you understand what you need to do, especially when you chat with the players and the youth.
“For me, it is a university. A university where you can grasp what you need to do because once you finish playing at the highest level, like Lampard and Gerrard, you can quickly move on to another job. (But) you must comprehend.
“I believe that players must do something before becoming managers. I noticed these two outstanding players, two of the best players I managed, and I am confident that in the future, they will be excellent head coaches in major teams. Because they realize the error they made at the beginning.”
Steven Gerrard wants to return as Rangers manager
Steven Gerrard is one of the most prominent figures in the Ibrox manager debate.
It wasn’t always plain sailing under Gerrard at Ibrox but the former England captain is out of work after quitting Al-Ettifaq earlier in the season.
Gerrard is also the only manager other than the legendary Walter Smith to win the Scottish Premiership in the last 15 years, and the ex-LA Galaxy star has a 64% victory rate in 12 games versus Celtic.
A recent Instagram post featuring Gerrard and Rangers’ official suit provider sent tongues wagging, and not without good reason.
As Rangers News exclusively disclosed, Stevie G is interested in making a splashy return to Rangers, and the club has explored the Liverpool legend as a possibility.
If Rangers and Gerrard both leave, Fabio Capello predicts that the Ibrox club would come to regret it.
