Ex-PL CEO: Leeds endorsed for promotion following ‘breakdown’

Keith Wyness, Everton’s former manager, believes Leeds United’s crushing 4-0 defeat against QPR could be just what they need to boost their promotion chances this season.

Speaking on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old, who was CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009 and now runs a football consultancy that advises elite clubs, claims that it sometimes “takes a breakdown to break through” after the Whites’ recent poor performance.

Leeds have now won just one of their last five Championship games, with only one game remaining to try to secure automatic promotion.

Daniel Farke’s side is hopeful that a win over Southampton at Elland Road will be enough to lift them back above second-placed Ipswich Town, who only need a point against everyone but relegated Huddersfield Town to be promoted.

Leeds United could still get promoted.

Wyness feels Leeds will have enough at their disposal to achieve an immediate return to the Premier League, despite their lack of form coming at the wrong time.

He told Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast: “Having been in the league with Aston Villa, when we thought we were going to gain automatic promotion but ended up in the playoff final, which we lost, I know how tough that league is.

“I think Leeds will make it. There is just something they will fight and overcome.

“Hopefully, the outcome against QPR was a blip and they can now regroup.

“We saw that Everton recently lost 6-0. They regrouped and delivered some of their best performances of the season.

“I’m hoping Leeds can use that 4-0 defeat to regroup mentally and finish the season well.

“Sometimes it takes a breakdown to break through.”
